Supracor is an engineered materials manufacturer and the originator of fusion-bonded honeycomb technology. The company was founded in 1982 as a research effort to develop an aerospace honeycomb free from traditional limitations, offering new and enhanced characteristics.
Aerospace honeycomb made from rigid materials such as aramid fiber, fiberglass or aluminum is characterized by alternating single- and double-walled cells which enable the structure to be highly resilient and lightweight. Supracor’s objective was to develop a honeycomb core with the same characteristics of aerospace honeycomb, but with the additional advantage of “memory” or recovery upon impact and, therefore, the ability to absorb multiple impacts.
This was achievable with the use of thermoplastics and a proprietary fusion-bonding technique that eliminated the need for adhesives. The flexible honeycomb core that Supracor developed has numerous applications in consumer and industrial markets, including aerospace where lightweight, resilient seating and sleep surfaces are essential for passengers and pilots.
